Your Opinion: Religious Education

A friend on one of my email lists was wondering about sending her child to Church sponsored CCD classes.

I think the answer to the question depends largely on how you feel about your Parish. I would advise you to get to know the teacher(s) first - as well as the curriculum they use. Our kids attended CCD up until First Communion, Cate went beyond that to age 11 or 12. There were several factors involved in our decision to discontinue. Jack and Carrie became mind-numbingly bored because we had covered all the material and more at home. When Cate was in "EDGE", they started talking about s*x and drugs - we pulled her out pretty sharpish. In addition, the teachers were abominably ignorant of their own Faith and passed along various and sundry erroneous tidbits, ranging from minor to major.

The teachers, however. loved our kids in their classes. They were polite, well-behaved, and knowledgeable.

Catherine is now back in the program - Life Teen. We felt that she was at an age and level of discernment that we can talk through things that come up. She is amazingly adept at spotting errors in teaching and isn't afraid to politely point them out. Her group leader is a dear friend of ours and understands our desire for preserving Cate's innocence. We feel safe having her there. If Mimi wasn't there, we probably would not have sent Cate...

How do you handle Religious Education?

Hi Nissa,
Catching up on my blogging after coming out of the illness fog. This is interesting , I hope it is okay to answer when one isn't Catholic:-) I used to be, does that count..LOL We don't leave Bible teaching up to the church. We are Christians and attend a Southern Baptist Church that has a great Sunday School program. We always know ahead by quarters what the kids will be studying. They send out parent info packs. Church doctrine isn't taught as much simply because we don't follow any "religious doctrine", all our teaching comes strictly from the Bible. But, we do use the Westminster Abbey Short Cathechism for our home devotions and study. My hubby and I just don't teach certain topics we don't feel is Biblically based from the catechism. All in all most of their Bible Study is at home . We do participate in small group study for the children some years and this year Sam is in the youth group which meets on Fridays. They have a game time, teaching time and small group study which my dh is the leader in his group. We stay close to our kids so we know what they are learning. Guess that sums it up:-)
